Golden West Shutters opened in 1989 with a simple idea: the most qualified shutter company is one that specializes only in shutters and builds them in-house. Not a window-covering generalist. Not a reseller. Not a big-box store. A manufacturer.
That conviction has driven every decision since. While competitors moved to imported shutters and outsourced installation in the 1990s and 2000s, we kept our manufacturing in Lake Forest. Today, we are one of the last standing local shutter manufacturers in Orange County, and the model that once seemed old-fashioned has become our biggest advantage.

Meet The Owners
Your project is owner-managed. David Harris and John Stahman are fully active in the day-to-day management of Golden West Shutters. You will see them on the factory floor, in the showroom, and sometimes on installations.
David’s background is in Industrial Engineering. John’s is in Mechanical Engineering. That combination has shaped the way we manufacture, and it shows up in every shutter we build:
- Ten-step finishing process built around fine furniture grade standards
- Tight tolerances on panel construction so shutters fit cleanly to the frame, with no gaps, no rattles, and no warping over time
- Custom milling capability for any window shape, from standard rectangles to bay windows, arched tops, eyebrow windows, and angled openings up to 48 inches wide
David and John talk to customers personally, walk visitors through the factory, and stand behind every shutter that leaves the building. This is not a national brand with a regional sales rep. It is a local manufacturing business run by the people who own it.
Why Local Manufacturing Matters
Most shutters sold in Orange County are imported from overseas. They sit in shipping containers, get warehoused, and reach the homeowner weeks (sometimes months) after the order is placed. Custom adjustments are difficult once a panel ships from a factory you cannot visit.
Local manufacturing gives our customers four real advantages:
- Faster turnaround. Most orders ship and install in 3 to 5 weeks, not 8 to 12.
- Real custom fit. If your bay window is one degree off square or your arched top has an unusual radius, we can build for that specific window. Imported sets cannot.
- Hands-on quality control. Every panel is inspected by the team that built it before it leaves the factory.
- Local accountability. If you ever need service, we are 30 minutes away, not on another continent.
We invite homeowners to tour our factory before placing an order. You can watch the milling, sanding, finishing, and inspection process in person. It is a 30-minute walk-through that tells you more about quality than any brochure can.

Beyond David and John, our team includes shutter designers who handle in-home consultations, factory craftsmen who mill and finish each shutter, and in-house installers (not subcontractors) who handle every install personally.
