Understanding Plantation Shutters in Orange County: What Homeowners Need to Know
Golden West Shutters is the only local plantation shutter manufacturer in Orange County. Every shutter we sell is designed, milled, finished, and inspected at our 10,000 square foot factory in Lake Forest, just off the 241 Toll Road. We are also a full-service window supplier, which means you are buying directly from the people building your shutters, not from a reseller or import warehouse.
The factory and adjacent showroom are open to the public during business hours. We encourage every potential customer to visit before placing an order. A 30-minute walk-through tells you more about what makes our shutters different than any brochure or website can.
Address: 20561 Pascal Way, Lake Forest, CA 92630 Phone: (949) 951-0600
Most shutter companies sell a product their customers have never seen built. Imported shutters arrive in a container, get unpacked at a distribution center, and reach the homeowner with no transparency into how they were made. Quality is whatever the overseas factory decided to ship that day.
We do the opposite. When you visit our Lake Forest facility, you see:
- The raw North American Basswood and polyresin material before it becomes a shutter
- Panels being milled, sanded, drilled, and assembled
- The two in-house spray booths where every shutter is finished
- Quality inspection stations where the team checks tolerances before shutters ship
- Typically 10 to 20 completed orders staged for installation that week
You can talk to the people building shutters, ask questions about your specific project, and see different materials, frame styles, and louver sizes side by side. That kind of transparency does not exist with imported product.

What You Will See on a Factory Tour
Most shutter companies sell you a product you’ve never seen made. At Golden West Shutters, we invite you to experience the difference firsthand.
When you visit our Lake Forest factory and showroom, you’re not stepping into a sales pitch—you’re seeing the entire process, from raw materials to finished shutters. Unlike imported shutters that are mass-produced with limited oversight, everything we build is controlled in-house from start to finish. This transparency gives you clarity, confidence, and control before making a decision.
The Showroom
Inside our showroom you will find a working display of every custom shutter design we manufacture: standard rectangular plantation shutters, clearview (no-visible-tilt-rod) panels, arched tops, French door panels, sliding bypass tracks, and shaped specialty windows.
You can compare:
- Frame profiles (detail frame, L-frame, decorative frame)
- Mounting methods (inside mount vs outside mount)
- Louver sizes (2.5 inch, 3.5 inch, 4.5 inch)
- Panel configurations (full height, tier on tier, café style)
- Material options (wood shutters, poly shutters, and our exclusive Polylux hybrid)
This hands-on comparison helps you understand how each design looks and functions before you commit. There is no substitute for seeing and touching the actual product in person.
The Manufacturing Floor
A walk through the manufacturing area shows the full build process from raw material to finished panel. We work with three core material families:
- Real wood: North American Basswood, the gold standard for plantation shutters. Dimensionally stable, holds finishes cleanly, accepts custom paint and stain matching.
- Polyresin composite: A solid synthetic core with no wood content. Fully waterproof, ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms.
- Polylux hybrid: Our exclusive system combining the structural strength of wood with the moisture resistance of composite for windows that need both.
Each material is selected by application. Bay window in a sunny living room? Wood. Master bath window over a shower? Poly or Polylux. We design every project around the actual demands of each window, not a one-size-fits-all spec sheet.
The Finishing Process
The finish is the most overlooked detail in shutter quality, and it is where imported product fails fastest. Many imported polyurethane shutters are not truly finished at all, just molded with color or sprayed with a single light coating that fades and yellows within a few years.
We finish every shutter to fine furniture grade standards. The process includes:
- Multiple stages of sanding to a smooth, consistent surface
- Premium acrylic lacquer coatings (the same family used on high-end furniture)
- Two in-house spray booths with controlled airflow and dust filtration
- Multiple coats with sanding between each layer
- Final inspection for color uniformity and surface defects
The result is a hard, smooth, silk-like finish that resists fading, yellowing, chipping, and surface wear. It is also easy to clean with a damp cloth, since the surface does not absorb dust the way a poorly finished shutter does.
Quality Control — Built Into Every Step
Because we manufacture in-house, quality control is built into every step rather than tacked on at the end. Each shutter is inspected at multiple points: after milling, after assembly, after finishing, and again before installation. Our owners, David Harris and John Stahman, are on the floor regularly and personally review tolerances on custom orders.
Tight tolerances on panel construction mean shutters fit cleanly to the frame. No gaps, no rattles, no warping. The lifetime warranty we offer is possible because of the inspection process at every stage.
Book your free consultation and your shutters will move through this same process from design to installation.

In-Home Measurement and Design
If you would rather have us come to you first, your in-home consultation is conducted by the owners themselves, Dave and John, who have been the original and only owners of Golden West Shutters for over 35 years.
Both are college-educated engineers (Dave in Industrial Engineering, John in Mechanical Engineering) with decades of hands-on manufacturing experience. They are not selling shutters from a script. They are designing solutions for your specific windows based on material performance, light exposure, room function, and long-term durability.
During the consultation you will receive:
- Honest, technical guidance on material tradeoffs
- Pros and cons of every design option for your specific home
- Precise measurements taken on the spot
- A written estimate with itemized line pricing before they leave
- Zero pressure, zero follow-up sales calls
If you decide to move forward, your shutters enter production at the factory. If you decide not to, that is fine. Our reputation depends on every customer feeling that they made an informed decision.

Shutter Manufacturing FAQs
Are your plantation shutters really manufactured locally in Orange County?
Yes. Every custom plantation shutter we sell is designed, milled, finished, and assembled in our Lake Forest factory at 20561 Pascal Way. Unlike most shutter retailers and nearly all window covering companies, we do not import. Every step from raw material to installed product happens in Orange County.
Can I visit your factory and showroom before purchasing?
Absolutely. Walk-in visitors are welcome during business hours. Many homeowners visit the factory before deciding, and we recommend it. Seeing how shutters are built clarifies the quality difference better than any brochure.
What is the advantage of buying from a local manufacturer instead of a retailer?
Three things: faster turnaround (3 to 5 weeks instead of 8 to 12), real custom fit for unusual window shapes, and direct accountability if anything ever needs service. You are working with the people who built your shutters, not a sales rep two layers removed from production.
Does seeing the factory really make a difference before buying plantation shutters?
Yes. A factory visit lets you compare materials side by side, see the finishing process in person, and understand the difference between a shutter built to last and one built to look acceptable on day one. Most homeowners walking through for the first time tell us they had no idea this level of craftsmanship existed locally.
Do I need an appointment to visit?
No appointment is required for the showroom. If you want a guided factory tour with one of the owners, calling ahead is helpful so we can plan around production schedules.
