“I could not be more pleased with the quality and custom fit shutters for my living room. I selected Golden West Shutters since they were a local Orange County manufacturer. The owner, Dave personally designed my wood shutters with a contemporary design, matching my shaker cabinets with a custom color. The installation was timely and professional. Highly recommend visiting their factory.”
See who builds your plantation shutters in Orange County before you buy
Golden West designs, builds, and finishes every plantation shutter at our own factory in Lake Forest, next door to Irvine, and has since 1987. Most shutters sold in Orange County are imported and ordered through a dealer, so the company selling them rarely sees how they were built or finished. There are no industry standards for shutter materials, finish, or construction, so the market tends to compete on price rather than quality. Come see how yours is built, and meet the people who build it, before you buy.
How shutters are sold in Orange County
Most homeowners choose between two paths without realizing it. One is a local manufacturer that builds shutters in its own facility. The other is a company that imports shutters, often with little control over how they are made or finished. Because there are no industry standards for materials, finish, or construction, price ends up driving the market more than quality does. A company buying imported product is usually pushed toward the lowest-cost option, and the people selling it may never have seen it built.
Golden West works the other way. We design, mill, finish, and install in-house in Lake Forest, which means we answer for every stage ourselves. When something needs to change on a custom order, the people who can change it are in the same building. That control is the whole reason this page exists, and the reason we invite you to come see it.
Why building custom shutters in-house changes the result

Choosing the right material is the part we spend the most time on with you, because the best shutter depends on your home and where you live. A coastal window in San Clemente may point to poly, a sun-exposed home in Yorba Linda may suit basswood, and a large opening with moisture exposure that needs added strength may point to our Polylux hybrid. We walk through those trade-offs room by room during your consultation, then build the panels and frames here on our own Lake Forest floor.
Because we build in-house, the details can be adjusted to the window instead of forced into a stocked product. Basswood panels are milled, sanded, and squared here so they hang straight on tall and wide openings. If a window needs a custom panel, frame, or arch, the people making those decisions are the same people building the shutter.
Compare our wood shutters, poly shutters, and Polylux hybrid shutters to choose the right material for your home, window, and exposure.
Why in-house finishing is where shutter quality shows

The finish is one of the easiest parts of a shutter to overlook, but it is also one of the first places quality shows. Every shutter we build, even the poly, gets a furniture-grade satin finish held to a 30 sheen and sprayed in two in-house booths at our Lake Forest factory. That 30 sheen is our measured finish standard, developed from the kind of satin finish expected in fine cabinetry and furniture work, so the surface looks even and consistent across every panel in your home.
A finish like that comes from the whole process, not from how much paint goes on. The quality and source of the lacquer, the undercoat, the sanding between coats, the booth’s equipment, calibration, and airflow, and the finisher’s expertise all affect the final result. We use an acrylic lacquer from the same family used on fine furniture, built up in several coats and sanded smooth, for a hard satin surface that resists fading and yellowing and wipes clean.
People often use durability and quality like they mean the same thing, but with shutters they show up in different ways. Durability is how long the shutter holds up. Quality is what you see and feel every day: the smoothness of the finish, the consistency of the sheen, the way the edges are finished, and how clean the shutter looks in the room. That is the part we treat as the product. Custom colors are matched here against a swatch from your own room, not pulled from a stock chart.
See finished plantation shutters before you choose yours

Most homeowners compare material, louver size, frame style, and price, but the finish is often the detail they forget to inspect. That is why we do not start with only a small sample on a wall. Because Golden West Shutters manufactures locally, on most days 10 to 20 finished shutter orders are on our Lake Forest floor, each one custom-built for a real home and waiting for installation. Seeing a finished Golden West shutter shows the quality more clearly than a sample ever can.
Up close is where the build and finish show. You can see how tightly the louvers close, how even the gaps are, how clean the edges look, and how the surface feels in your hand. Those details affect light control, appearance, and the way the shutter feels as a permanent part of the home.
Because these are real orders, you see actual sizes and shapes built for actual rooms, not oversized displays made only for a showroom. Each shutter is custom-built and installed by our own crew.

Meet the owners behind your shutters

Your in-home consultation is done by an owner, not a commissioned salesperson. Dave or John measures your openings, walks you through the trade-offs between materials, and writes the quote. That matters because the same company advising you also builds the shutters in its Lake Forest factory.
Golden West has had the same two owners since 1987, with engineering backgrounds and decades of hands-on manufacturing experience. Their work shows up in the details customers rarely see on a sales call: panel fit, frame decisions, material choice, in-house finishing, and the way custom openings are handled before the shutter is built.
They live and work in the same communities they serve, and every shutter that leaves the factory carries their name and reputation.
“I’ve personally built every shutter. Cabinetry has been my passion since I was young, and I take great pride in the work, knowing our customers are taken care of like it’s my own home.”John, Owner
Common questions
- Are your plantation shutters really made in Orange County?
- Yes. Every Golden West shutter is designed, built, and finished at our Lake Forest factory, then installed by our own crew. Most shutter and window-covering companies import their product. We control materials, construction, and the furniture-grade finish in-house, here in Orange County.
- Can I visit the factory and showroom before I buy?
- Yes, and most customers do. Walk in during business hours, no appointment needed, to see the materials, the build, and finished panels in person. We are at 20561 Pascal Way, Lake Forest, CA 92630, next door to Irvine. Hours are Monday to Friday 9 to 5 and Saturday 10 to 4.
- Why buy from a local manufacturer instead of a retailer?
- You get the people who build your shutters, not a middleman. That means tighter quality control, faster turnaround, direct answers during design, and one company accountable from measurement through install. Most orders are built and installed in 3 to 5 weeks.
- Does seeing the factory actually change anything?
- It is the clearest way to judge quality before you commit. You can compare materials and construction side by side, see 10 to 20 finished orders staged for install, and ask the people doing the work. Quality you can see and feel beats a sample chip and a price.
