Child-safe and pet-safe window coverings for Orange County homes
By Dave Harris — Co-founder, Golden West Shutters
The safest window covering for a home with kids or pets is one with no cords at all. That is the simplest version of a rule the whole industry now follows, and plantation shutters meet it by design. They have no pull cords, no lift cords, and no looped chains hanging where a child can reach.
Window cord injuries are not a rare or theoretical problem. Children have been hurt and killed by blind cords for decades, which is why the safety standard changed in 2018. Many Orange County homes still have older corded blinds in bedrooms and playrooms.
This post covers what the current standard requires, why shutters are inherently child-safe, and how poly and Polylux hold up to pets. Golden West Shutters has built for more than 60,000 Orange County homes since 1987, so most of this comes from family homes we have measured ourselves.
What does the WCMA cordless standard require
The standard requires that stock window coverings be cordless by default. In 2018 the Window Covering Manufacturers Association and the Consumer Product Safety Commission updated the voluntary safety standard. Off-the-shelf products sold at retail must now ship without accessible cords. Corded operation is allowed only on custom orders, and only when the buyer asks for it.
The same group runs a certification called Best for Kids. Products that meet its cordless and safety requirements can carry the mark. Looking for that mark is one of the fastest ways to filter for a covering built to the current rule.
The standard is voluntary, meaning the government does not directly enforce it. Most major manufacturers follow it anyway. If a product you are weighing does not meet the WCMA standard in 2026, that is worth knowing before you buy.
Why are plantation shutters child-safe by design
Plantation shutters are among the safest window coverings because there are no cords to begin with. The louvers tilt with a rod or a hidden mechanism you work by hand. The panels swing on hinges and the frame mounts to the wall. Nothing dangles, nothing loops, and nothing hangs at a height a child can pull.
This solves the safety problem at the design level instead of working around it with a cordless retrofit. The operating mechanism is built into the panel itself, so there is no cord to fail or come loose later.
The only real choice for a family room is the tilt method. A standard tilt rod lets a child adjust the light in their own room, which is intuitive and easy. A hidden tilt is harder for small hands to operate. For most homes the tilt rod works well and holds up to daily use.
How do shutters hold up to dogs and cats
Shutters hold up to pets far better than blinds or shades because the parts are heavier and harder to chew, scratch, or bend. A puppy that would shred a roller shade in a week often leaves a plantation shutter untouched. The components do not splinter the way thin plastic slats can, and there are no cord ends to swallow.
Pets create a different set of problems than children. Dogs and cats scratch at windows to look out, which damages vertical and horizontal blinds quickly. Larger dogs push through light coverings to reach a windowsill, tearing fabric shades. Wagging tails dent low-mounted blinds over time.
For active-pet households, material matters as much as the safety rating. Real basswood and poly both resist this kind of wear. No covering is fully pet-proof against determined chewing, so the goal is a product that survives normal pet activity and poses no risk if a pet does get to it.
Are poly and Polylux easier to clean with kids and pets
Poly and Polylux wipe clean with a damp cloth, which matters in a house with sticky hands and muddy paws. The surface is sealed and moisture-resistant, so fingerprints, food, and pet nose smudges come off without special cleaners. There is no fabric to absorb odors and no cord channel to trap dust.
Polylux is our hybrid. It pairs a real wood frame with poly louvers, built for large windows and rooms with steam or splashing. That makes it a strong fit for a kitchen window over the sink or a kid's bathroom, where a fabric shade would stain and a corded shade mechanism would corrode faster.
We mill and finish every shutter at our Lake Forest factory, in painted or stained finishes, with 2.5 inch and 3.5 inch louvers. Painted poly is the easiest surface to keep clean in the highest-traffic family rooms.
Room-by-room recommendations for family homes
Different rooms call for different choices, but the through-line is the same. Keep cords out of reach and match the material to how hard the room gets used.
- Nursery and young children's rooms: plantation shutters. No cords, no loops, and no accessible hardware a climbing child can grab.
- Older children's rooms: shutters with a standard tilt rod, so the child can open and close their own light.
- Living and family rooms: shutters as the default. For homes with very active pets, poly louvers shrug off wear better than wood.
- Kitchens: poly or Polylux shutters that wipe clean and tolerate cooking moisture.
- Bathrooms: poly or Polylux, which handle the warm, wet air better than any corded shade mechanism.
- Stairwells and high windows: motorized or shutters, so there is no cord or hardware at a height where a child could fall reaching for it.
Questions to ask before you buy
A few direct questions tell you fast whether a product is genuinely safe. Ask whether it is WCMA Best for Kids certified. If not, ask why and what the safe alternative is.
Ask exactly how the product operates. You want a clear answer: cordless wand, motorized, or shutter louver tilt. If the answer is vague, the product probably has a cord somewhere. Ask where any internal cords or retraction mechanisms sit, since some products marketed as cordless still hide cords that can pose a risk if a part fails.
For a home with pets, ask about chew and scratch resistance specifically, and ask what the warranty covers. Our shutters carry a lifetime warranty on materials and workmanship, and lead time runs 3 to 5 weeks. A consultant who answers these plainly is worth working with.
The practical bottom line
For most Orange County family homes, the durable and safe setup is plantation shutters in the main living areas, with poly or Polylux in kitchens and baths. That gives you a cord-free home that holds up to daily wear and pet activity, and a surface that wipes clean in seconds.
