Custom vs. made-to-measure shutters: what's the difference
By Dave Harris — Co-founder, Golden West Shutters
Made-to-measure shutters fit your window's size. Truly custom shutters fit your window, your room and how you live, designed by the owners and built in our Lake Forest factory. Made-to-measure starts from a standard layout: you pick the louver size and color, and the factory fills in the rest. Custom means the panel layout, frame, material and finish are all chosen for that opening.
Most homeowners assume every shutter is custom. Most are made-to-measure. On a simple, square window the two can look alike. The difference shows on tall, wide, arched and off-square openings, and around door handles, window cranks and cabinets.
Side by side
| Made-to-measure | Truly custom (Golden West) | |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Order form from a standard layout | Designed with the owners, Dave and John |
| Panel layout | Set by the template | Stile widths, rail heights and dividers chosen for each window |
| Special shapes | Often refused or surcharged | Arches, sunbursts and angled tops milled in-house |
| Material | Often one material for the whole house | Chosen window by window: wood, poly or Polylux |
| Finish | Standard color list | Sprayed coat by coat in our own booths; any paint or stain matched |
| Installation | Pre-assembled at the factory; no adjustment or touch-up on site | Fitted, adjusted and touched up on site by our own finish carpenters |
| Lead time | Often 8 to 12 weeks | 3 to 5 weeks from our Lake Forest factory |
When made-to-measure is enough
For a standard, square window in a simple room, or a rental where budget comes first, made-to-measure can be a reasonable choice. The gaps show up when the window or the room is not standard: light leaks at the edges, heavy filler frames, or panels trimmed to clear a handle.
Why installation is part of custom
Installation is the part of a shutter most buyers never ask about. Most made-to-measure shutters arrive with the frame already assembled at the factory. That one fact decides how much window you keep, how well the panels line up, and how the corners look for years.
Does a pre-assembled frame make my window look smaller?
Often, yes. Pre-assembled shutters usually use an inside-mount frame, nailed inside the window jamb where the holes hide behind the panels. That avoids paint touch-up, but the frame sits inside the opening and shrinks it. The louvers get shorter, you can lose one or two louvers, and the rails are fixed, sometimes up to 6 inches tall. Our showroom has the same window size mounted both ways, inside mount above outside mount, so you can see the difference.
What if a window is out of alignment on install day?
A pre-assembled shutter can't be adjusted, so it goes in as built. Some problems, like a sloped sill or a window out of alignment, only show up on install day. Our installers are finish carpenters with the same skills as a cabinetry installer, licensed contractors and Golden West employees. They adjust each frame on site, and when a window needs more, they take it back to our Lake Forest factory and build the fix there.
Dave compares it to a quarterback's audible: the play is set in the design, but the final call is made on the field.
Can the frame corners be touched up?
Not on a pre-assembled shutter. The frame is mitered and finished at the factory, so if a corner separates, the gap stays. "It's like a pimple on a nose," says Dave. Our finish carpenters touch up every miter on site with paint from our own spray booth, from the same paint lot as your shutters.
How to tell if a shutter is truly custom
Ask any shutter company these six questions:
- Who designs my shutters, and can I change the stile widths, rail heights and panel layout?
- Where are they built, and can I see the factory?
- Can you build arches, sunbursts and angled tops without a large surcharge?
- Will you choose the material window by window, for moisture and panel size?
- Is the finish sprayed and sanded between coats, and can you match my paint or stain?
- Who installs them, and can they adjust and touch up the frame on site?
These match the six principles of a custom shutter we use on every job.

Common questions
Are made-to-measure shutters the same as custom shutters?
No. Made-to-measure means built to your window's size. Custom means designed for the window and the room, with the panel layout, frame, material and finish all chosen for that opening.
Do custom shutters cost more than made-to-measure?
Not always. We build in our own factory and sell direct, so there is no importer or reseller markup in the price. The owner prices every job, and the free consultation gives you a written quote for each room. See our 2026 price guide.
How long do custom shutters take?
Most Golden West orders install in 3 to 5 weeks, because every shutter is built in our Lake Forest factory. Imported made-to-measure orders often take 8 to 12 weeks.
What if my windows aren't square or level?
That's common, especially in older homes. We measure each opening, not just the window size, and build every panel to it in our Lake Forest factory. On install day our finish carpenters fit and scribe each frame to your walls, so the shutters sit straight and close evenly.
