How much do plantation shutters cost in 2026? (with real Orange County examples)

By Dave Harris — Co-founder, Golden West Shutters

It depends on four things: whether the shutters are made locally or imported, the material, the finish, and whether they are fitted on site by finish carpenters or arrive pre-assembled from overseas. At our Lake Forest factory, shutters start as low as $250 for a small window, and most standard windows run $450 to $700 installed, up to about $1,200 for large ones.

The question every homeowner asks first

Before you commit to anything, you want to know what this is going to cost. That is completely fair.

The problem is that most websites give you a national average that does not match what you will actually be quoted in Southern California. And most local companies will not publish pricing at all.

This guide changes that. Below you will find real price ranges for custom plantation shutters in Orange County, broken down by material, window size, and room, so you can walk into a consultation with realistic expectations.

A few important notes before we start. Every home is different. Bay windows, arched windows, and unusually large windows all affect the final number. The ranges below reflect typical quotes for standard residential windows in the South Orange County market in 2026. They are meant to give you an honest starting point, not a final bid.

What makes the price go up or down

Five things drive the cost of plantation shutters more than anything else.

1. Material

Most people assume poly is the budget option. It isn't anymore. Quality poly is a solid, oil-based material: an extruded polyurethane reinforced with aluminum, not the thin, hollow vinyl sold at big-box stores. With today's oil prices, a poly shutter in its factory color now costs as much as, or more than, a real wood shutter with our multi-coat, furniture-grade finish. Choose poly for what it does best, standing up to outside moisture like ocean air or rain through an open window, not to save money.

2. Window size

Larger windows need larger panels and more material. A standard 36-inch by 60-inch bedroom window will cost less than a 72-inch by 84-inch living room window. Simple as that.

3. Number of windows

Most companies price by the window or by the linear foot. The more windows you do at once, the more leverage you have. Doing your whole home in one project almost always costs less per window than doing one room at a time.

4. Custom shapes

Standard rectangular windows are the most affordable to cover. Arched windows, angled windows, and odd-shaped windows require specialty fabrication, which adds cost.

5. Who you buy from

This one is often overlooked. A big-box retailer sells a pre-made product that may or may not fit right. A local company that manufactures its own shutters can be more cost-effective, with a better fit, form, and quality, because there is no middleman markup. It is even better when you are working directly with the owner of the factory.

Price ranges by material

Poly shutters

Our poly shutters are extruded polyurethane reinforced with aluminum. They are built for windows exposed to moisture from outside: salt air and ocean spray near the beach, or rain blowing in through a window that stays open. They will not warp or swell, and they wipe clean.

For a standard single window, installed poly shutters in Orange County now typically run between $450 and $700 per window, about the same as real wood. Larger windows will fall toward the higher end of that range.

Poly is a strong choice for homes close to the beach, rental homes, and households that leave windows open, rain or shine.

Real wood shutters

Wood shutters have a richer, warmer look than poly. They are the go-to choice for living rooms, formal dining rooms, and home offices where the aesthetic carries more weight.

For a standard single window, installed wood shutters in Orange County typically run between $450 and $700 per window. Custom stains, specialty louver sizes, and unusually large windows will push that number higher.

Window size moves the price the most. In wood or poly, a small window starts as low as $250 installed, a standard window runs $450 to $700, and a large window can reach about $1,200.

What about the whole home?

If your home has 12 to 16 windows, which is common for a 2,500 to 3,000 square foot home in South Orange County, a whole-home project typically runs $6,000 to $11,000 installed. That holds whether you choose poly in its factory color or wood with our furniture-grade finish, because the two now cost about the same. Window count and sizes move the number more than the material does.

These are ranges, not quotes. Your specific home could be higher or lower. But these numbers should help you understand what you are looking at before you call anyone.

Price by room: what to expect

Different rooms have different priorities, and that affects both material choice and cost.

Home office

If you work from home, your office window is probably the most urgent problem to solve. Glare on a computer screen, bad lighting on video calls, and an unprofessional backdrop all point to the same fix: shutters with full louver control. A single large west-facing window fitted with wood or poly shutters typically runs $450 to $700 installed.

Master bathroom

Contrary to what most people think, everyday shower humidity has no real effect on a quality wood shutter with a furniture-grade finish. Your vanity, baseboards, and door live in the same air and hold up fine. Poly only earns its place on a window that takes direct shower spray or stays open. Wood and poly cost about the same here: for a standard bathroom window, expect $450 to $700 installed.

Living room / bay window

The living room is often the most expensive single-room project because of window size and complexity. A bay window with three panels requires precise measurement and custom fabrication to look right. Bay window projects in Orange County typically run $1,800 to $3,500 depending on the size of the opening, in wood or poly.

Bedrooms

Bedrooms are usually the most straightforward and affordable rooms to shutter. A standard bedroom window runs $450 to $700 installed, depending on size and finish.

The hidden costs worth knowing about

Most reputable shutter companies in Orange County include measurement and professional installation in their quoted price. That is standard. What you want to confirm before signing anything:

  • Is installation included? It should be. But ask what "installation" means, and who will be doing it.
  • Is the measurement visit free? It should be.
  • What does the warranty cover, and who honors it? Ours is a lifetime warranty on materials and workmanship, backed by our own Lake Forest factory.
  • Are there any fees for specialty shapes or large windows? Ask upfront.

If a company quotes you an unusually low price and then adds fees for installation later, that is a red flag.

What "installation" should mean

To some sellers, installation means hanging a shutter that was pre-assembled overseas, exactly as it arrived, with no touch-up or alignment. That is not the same job as a professional installation, and the difference shows up in every gap and crooked louver.

  • Just hung: a pre-assembled panel, often imported, hung by a subcontractor or handyman as delivered. No adjustment, no touch-up. Gaps and misaligned louvers stay as they arrived.
  • Professionally installed: a finish carpenter fits the frame to your opening, aligns every panel and louver, finishes the mitered corners, touches up the finish, adjusts hinge tension, and troubleshoots anything that isn't right before leaving.

Ask who will install your shutters: the company's own finish carpenters, or a subcontractor. At Golden West, every shutter is installed by our own finish carpenters, never a subcontractor. See our installation process.

What Orange County homeowners actually spend

To give you a realistic picture without making up numbers, here are three common project types and what they typically cost in this market:

Single room (1 to 3 windows): $250 to $2,100 installed. This is the most common starting point for homeowners who want to solve one problem first, usually the home office, the master bathroom, or a front-facing living room window.

Partial home (4 to 8 windows): $1,800 to $5,600 installed. Many homeowners start here and add rooms later. Doing the main living areas in one pass tends to create a more cohesive look.

Typical project: $2,500 to $10,000 installed. The widest range because it depends heavily on window count and sizes. Poly and furniture-grade wood now cost about the same, so mixing materials no longer lowers the total. Choose each room's material by moisture and look.

Is it worth the investment?

This depends on what you value, but the practical case is straightforward.

Quality shutters last for decades with basic maintenance, and ours carry a lifetime warranty on materials and workmanship. Cheap vinyl blinds from a box store rarely survive more than 5 years before slats break, mechanisms fail, or the material yellows. Over the life of your home, the cost per year for quality shutters is often lower than repeatedly replacing cheaper alternatives.

Real estate agents in South Orange County regularly note that plantation shutters are one of the few window treatments that buyers view as a feature rather than a decoration. They read as a permanent, quality finish, not a personal preference that needs to be replaced.

There is also the energy side of the equation. Shutters with fully closed louvers add a layer of insulation at the window. In a climate with intense afternoon sun like Lake Forest and Foothill Ranch, that can make a measurable difference on summer electricity bills.

How to get an accurate quote

Our highly recommended first step: bring your rough window sizes and a few photos to our Lake Forest factory showroom. You can talk through options and pricing with the people who build your shutters right here in Lake Forest, without anyone coming to your house to sell you.

In the showroom you see full-size shutters, not a small sample in your living room. Compare materials, louver sizes, frames, finishes, and configurations side by side, and leave knowing exactly what you want. Save 5% when you order after your visit.

Before we build, we confirm every measurement in person. No photo or online calculator can account for your window depth, an out-of-square opening, or the louver size you settle on.
